Take A Chance

Sometimes you have to take chances.

I took a chance on Paul Weaver.

I’d written several novels in different genres including another middle grade manuscript about a teen girl who gets whisked away to a far away planet by some heavily confused aliens believing she is a chosen one meant to free their galaxy from an oppressive evil.

I’ve had out there ideas before, but for Paul’s story I wanted to do something different.

I wanted to construct the story in a way that modern readers could relate to that also reflected the uniqueness of Paul’s personality.

Paul is creative, funny, empathetic, and earnest. Paul isn’t the bravest person in the world, but he’s courageous when he needs to be—especially when his trusted corgi, Samwise, is at his side.

Paul’s struggle to save his hometown from what might be an evil wizard is also about him trying to find his place in the world.

Isn’t that what so many people do when they start a YouTube channel or a TikTok?

It’s not just fame or a small shot at fortune. It’s about finding your niche and a community.

So it made sense to me to have Paul tell his story in a series of vlogs. And it made sense to make the reader part of his community.

Paul Weaver and the Soul Reaver is NOT your typical story.

Paul Weaver is NOT your typical kid.

No matter how it all turns out.

I’m glad I took a chance on him.
